Why a seasonal calendar helps

Some household jobs come up only once or twice a year: testing alarms, swapping out winter clothes, booking a heating service visit, sorting last year's paperwork. Because they are rare, they are easy to forget until something reminds you at an inconvenient moment. A seasonal calendar spreads them across the year so that each month has a short, manageable list.

The calendar below has twelve groups, one for each month from January to December, with four to six general tasks each. Check items off as you finish them; your progress is saved in this browser on this device. You can also print the full year or download it as a PDF and keep it in a household binder.

Adjust it to your climate and household

The United States covers a wide range of climates, and this list is written for a general U.S. household. Treat the months as suggestions, not rules.

  • Warmer regions may shift clothing swaps later in the fall and earlier in the spring, and may care more about air conditioning service than snow supplies.
  • Colder regions may want to move outdoor tasks earlier in the fall, before the first freeze or snow.
  • Renters can skip or adapt tasks that are the landlord's responsibility, and instead note them to report to the building manager.
  • Households with school-age children may find August and early September the busiest months and want to move other tasks out of the way.

If a task does not apply to you, check it off so the month shows only what is left.

Turn each month into dates

A monthly list works best when its items land on a specific day. A simple routine:

  1. On the last weekend of each month, look at next month's group.
  2. Choose a day for each task and write it on your weekly home planner or family calendar.
  3. Put a name next to each task, especially if several people share the household.
  4. Book any professional appointments early. Service companies can be busy at the start of heating and cooling seasons.

If you would like a more detailed walk-through of building your own version, see the article on creating a seasonal household checklist.

Alarms, heating systems, and ladder work

Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms following the manufacturer's instructions; many households use the daylight saving time changes in March and November as a reminder. Heating and cooling systems should be serviced by a qualified technician. Gutter cleaning, roof work, and any job that requires a ladder are best handled by a qualified professional. This calendar is a general reminder list and does not replace manufacturer instructions or professional inspection.

Quiet months are good for memory projects

Late winter and midsummer often have fewer fixed obligations. The calendar suggests using those months for slower projects, such as sorting family photographs or recording a family recipe. These are good projects to share with an older relative, who may know the names and stories behind the pictures. See the guide to organizing family photographs and the Memory Book Creator if you want to turn the results into a keepsake.

Share the year

A seasonal calendar is easier to keep up when it is not one person's job. At the start of the year, sit down with the household and go through the twelve months together. Let people choose tasks they prefer, such as one person handling clothing swaps and another handling appointment scheduling. The Family Responsibility Planner can help you record who does what.

Several tasks connect to other printables on the site: January's contact sheet review uses the household contact sheet, and June's walk-through uses the room-by-room checklist.

It is written for a general U.S. household. Shift tasks earlier or later to suit your climate, and skip any that are your landlord's responsibility if you rent.

When should I test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms?

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your alarms. Many households use the daylight saving time changes in March and November as a reminder to test them.
